かつて、日本の体育関係の書物でさえ、「この競技の起源は、ノルウェーの処刑法にある」などとされ、広く信じられてきたが、これは俗説である。これは、ジャンプが、他のどのスポーツ競技と比較してもあまりにも恐怖感を伴うものであったため、重刑囚がこのジャンプをクリアできれば、その刑を軽減されるというものであり、いまだこの説を真実だと思っている者も多く存在している。
