この悲劇で腹立たしいのは，こんな悲劇はそもそも不必要だったって点だ．半世紀前には，どんな経済学者でも――あるいは，この点ではポール・サミュエルソンの教科書『経済学』を読んだ学部学生だって――不況期に緊縮策を打つのはすごい愚策だと言えてた．なのに，政策担当者や評論家ども，そして遺憾ながら多くの経済学者たちは，大部分は政治的な理由から，かつて知っていたことを忘れ去ることを選んでしまった．そして，彼らの意図的な健忘症の対価を，いま数百万人という労働者たちが払っている．
