寛仁親王は皇族のなかでお１人だけ、率先して機会あるごとに、自衛隊をお励ましになった。

海上自衛隊の練習艦隊が出航する前に、士官候補生をホテルに招いて、洋食のマナーを親授なされた。武道館で催される、自衛隊音楽祭にも御臨席になられた。

ある時、私に「何といっても、軍は国家の楯だからね」と、いわれた。

靖国神社の例大祭にも、御親拝を欠かされなかった。

親王殿下は皇族の皆様がそうだが、天皇家のお血筋のために、国民に片思いされていた。
