レーガンは出血を伴う重傷を負っていたにもかかわらず意識ははっきりしており、自らの胸から弾丸を取り除く手術の前には執刀外科医に対して、「あなた方がみな共和党員だといいんだがねぇ」とジョークを飛ばす余裕さえ見せた。執刀外科医は民主党員だったが、「大統領、今日一日われわれはみんな共和党員です」と答え、レーガンを喜ばせている。
